YaST module for IRST

a project by mlin7442

Intel Rapid Start Technology(IRST) is a firmware mechanism enables your system to get up and running faster from sleep, saving time and power consumption, it will cause the system to wake up from S3 and suspend to S4(with SSD)[1]. Currently kernel 3.11 already support it[2], however there haven't a graphic tool to control its wakeup event and timeout, like as similar tool on Windows[3]. This Hackweek I'll create a YaST module to handle those parameters. [1] http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/26022.html

A programming language exploration

a project by KGronlund

I would like to have a programming language that has the performance characteristics of C, but integrates some programming language features that I like from other languages. My first goal would be to start with a language that is very limited in scope and compiles directly to C, and step by step add to it. There are a lot of programming languages, but very few that handles memory as an explicit resource. To be able to explicitly manage memory is a very powerful technique and essential for applications such as high performance video games.

Adding Linux kernel firmware signature support

a project by mcgrof

The Linux kernel already has cryptographic support for signature verification on data. This is used to digitally sign kernel modules at build time, and verify integrity and provenance at load time. Likewise the 802.11 subsystem on the Linux kernel had historically in parallel prior to Linux's own kernel signing facility implemented and integrated support to verify file integrity and provenance for use on the Linux regulatory database. The 802.11 subsystem's components that provide this facility are CRDA and wireless-regdb. CRDA and wireless-regdb technically are split up as two separate trees for development, wireless-regdb helps provide the 802.11 regulatory database while CRDA exists as a udev helper to feed to the Linux kernel a regulatory domain when needed. By using a regulatory database in userspace the Linux kernel is able to get updates for regulatory rules without requiring a rebuild. Linux distributions need the digitally signed regulatory.bin file from wireless-regdb tree and the CRDA binary from the CRDA tree. Linux distributions often combine both into one package, some distributions separate the two. The regulatory database is digitally signed by the wireless-regdb maintainer, and distributions that have have compiled in support for digital signature support on CRDA verify the integrity of the file before feeding a regulatory domain to the Linux kernel. Since the kernel module signing facility was merged upstream on Linux we could replace both CRDA and wireless-regdb distribution mechanism by adding cryptographic file signature verification support on Linux on the firmware_class module which provides the APIs to load firmware, and having the regulatory.bin file merged and updated through the linux-firmware tree. Adding cryptographic signature verification support on the firmware APIs on Linux is the first step to replace CRDA and wireless-regdb's own signature functionality. The second step is to extend the firmware APIs to enable subsystems to customize cryptographic requirements.

Test methods to transfer NSS and DCSS objects from one z/VM system to another

a project by markkp

Last Hackweek I created a rescue system that is composed of a SUSE Linux kernel in an NSS (Named Saved System) and an xip2fs file system in a DCSS (Dis-Continguous Save Segment). This allows any Linux guest on a z/VM system to say "#cp ipl rescue" and have a fully functional SUSE Linux Enterprise system come up to allow them to fix what ever is wrong with the guest. This Hackweek I want to try to figure out a way to take those two components and package them so that our customers could download them and put them on their z/VM system, using only typical z/VM tools. The rescue system is the output of a Kiwi build in the internal Build Service, which means it can be easily updated as needed.

Use WSL to build qemu guest agent for VMDP

an idea by kallan

Now that Windows Fall Creator is out, I wanted to enable Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) on my VMDP build box and install openSUSE. Then inside openSUSE, I wanted to be able to build the qemu-ga component for VMDP. After adding the mingw packages along with git, I was successful in building qemu-ga. My next step is to move the built qemu-ga components into the packaging area of VMDP to produce the full VMDP package with qemu-ga in it.

an idea by mvetter

My knowledge of Qt is still superficial, I would like to deepen it and also learn QtQuick. Reading some books, experimenting and contributing somewhere.

A Voice Assisted and AI Enabled Product Manual Query System

an idea by charleswang007007

This is a project I made for IoT World Hackathon (May 16-17th 2018), sponsored by Google. The project features a streamlined product manual query system deployed with Google Cloud Platform, Google Assistant, and DialogFlow which greatly reduces time searching for instructions by building a voice-controlled and natural language understanding conversational interfaces on Raspberry Pi.

Use avahi for mdns queries in hplip

an idea by mwilck

The HPLIP package contains a custom implementation of mDNS queries (actually, 2: one in the core C code and one in python for the administration tools). This implementation is simplistic and sub-optimal. I fixed a problem of this implementation in the past, but unfortunately my patches don't apply on the latest HPLIP releases, and aren't easily forward-ported. The Right Thing to do for mDNS on Linux use use avahi calls. I want to look into using avahi for this purpose in HPLIP.
